Gathering update:
Mary Jo Miller & Kristy Brown joined the call
a.
Sponsorships are still coming in, almost $10,000 has
been received or pledged. Sponsors need to commit by this
coming Friday, 5-24-2013, to be included in the show book.
b.
Vendors - the number greatly exceeds last year with
sixteen signed up so far. The Promotions Committee had come
up with an idea to increase attendance at each vendor booth.
In keeping with the baseball theme for this year each vendor
will have baseball cards to give out to visitors to their
booths.
c.
Promotions Committee has worked out a promotion with
the Iowa Cubs (Des Moines based farm team for the Chicago
Cubs) where they will promote the llama show at their home
games that weekend and their mascot will "throw out the
first pitch" at the Gathering opening ceremony. One
or two players a day will be at the show as well. We will be
promoting the Cub's game at the show. The Committee
continues to solicit sponsorships.
d.
Entries are starting to pour in, almost 200 have been
received so far.
e.
Mary Jo asked that anyone that will be arriving at
the show on Wednesday let her know if they are available to
help with set up. After the Driving classes on Friday
morning they will need help to set up the "court yard." The
court yard will be between the performance and halter rings
and can be used by all to watch the shows and relax and
socialize. This area will also be used for the LFA sale
preview and sale. There will also be a potluck dinner, being
organized by the Shellabargers and Roger and Penny Williams.
on Wednesday night up in the campground. Anyone that wishes
to join them should contact Debbie Shellabarger for
information.
f.
A member asked if stalling will be available on
Sunday night. Mary Jo said she will have to check with the
fairgrounds and it might just be the stalls in the lower
barn as she believes the panels in the upper barn will be
removed Sunday afternoon.
Introductions
- Board members introduced themselves. Joining the Governing
Board as new ILR Board members are Debi Garvin and Harvey
Pool. Harvey previously served as chair of the Halter
Committee.
Committee Reports:
1.
Guidelines -
report by Karen Dean
A motion was made by Karen
Dean and seconded by Karen Baum to change the date that
final guidelines changes are to be submitted to the
Guidelines Committee from December 31 to November 30. Motion
was approved by all.
2.
Fleece - report
by Judy Ross
Judy reported
that the Fleece clinic scheduled at Harvey Pool's farm in
Georgia had to be canceled due to too few participants. They
will try to reschedule at a future time.
It had come to
the attention of the Fleece Committee that some shows are
not using the new fleece scoring cards. The committee has
sent letters to judges twice about using the new scorecards.
Tami volunteered to again inform the judges through the
Judges Committee newsletter. The group mentioned the need to
advise show managers to use the new score cards. It was not
determined who would do this however.
3.
Judges Committee
- reported by Tami
The Judges Committee
proposed changes to the guidelines to remove the 10 percent
for fleece to be considered in halter judging and a change
in showmanship guidelines (see proposal in attachments).
Tami presented the reasoning behind the need for the
changes. Bill, who sat on the original Halter Committee that
drafted these guidelines, agreed that the wording of the
fleece guideline did not match the original intent. Judy
presented reasons from a fleece standpoint that the fleece
halter guideline was flawed.
It was noted that the
proposal was presented to the Halter Committee for
consideration and they did not agree to adopt those changes
in Halter rules.
After much discussion, with
most members of the Governing Board agreeing that a change
would be beneficial, it was recommended that Harvey carry
the additional background presented by Tami, with support of
the other judges on the Board, back to the Halter Committee
for further consideration. Harvey agreed they would look at
it again.
4.
Halter Committee
- report by Harvey
Previous to this meeting the
Committee reviewed the proposed changes to fleece percentage
and showmanship made by the Judges Committee and decided
that the changes were not required. As reported under the
Judges Committee item, the Halter Committee will take
another look at the proposals.
With Harvey's election to
the ILR Board, a replacement for him is needed on the Halter
Committee. Per the established guidelines the ILR Board will
appoint a new member with input from the Committee. The
Halter Committee will need to elect a new chairperson as
well.
5.
Performance Committee
- report by Tom
Tom proposed that the
judges' newsletter that contained the performance training
items be shared with the entire Governing Board. He and the
committee felt this was an excellent guide. This will be
sent to all Governing Board members from the Judges
Committee.
6.
Youth Committee -
report by Debbie
Debbie sent new Youth
Judging forms to all Board members for review prior to the
meeting and they needed approval of them for an upcoming
show. Tami motioned that the new Youth Judging forms be
approved for use immediately, second by Bill. All approved.
Debbie indicated that they
have also developed Youth Judging quizzes for the Junior
Youth and ask that the Judges Committee review and approve
them via e-mail. Once approved Debbie will send them to the
Governing Board for approval. She is requesting a quick turn
around as they will be needed for a show. Karen asked that
all members keep an eye on their e-mail and respond as soon
as they can to the Youth quizzes proposal.

Judges Committee proposal
The Judges Committee has proposed these needed changes for
our 2014 Guidelines. It has come to our attention by giving
a 10% determination to fleece, that some Judges then wonder
what percentage would be needed for head, ears, front legs,
rear legs, topline, etc. This may be a reason some judges do
an 'overload' when it comes to the consideration of fleece.
We still want fleece to be a consideration, and in saying
that the JC feels the following verbiage will better suit
this need.
Currently:
XI. HALTER
A. APPROVED HALTER CLASSES
1. Approved Halter Class Guidelines
a) Halter classes will be judged based on the conformation
of the animals in the class as viewed from the front, rear
and the side while in motion and at rest. The overall
conformation & balance will be considered as well as
evaluation of the smoothness of gait while in motion. Fleece
consideration is 10% of the judge's evaluation. Fleece
characteristics to be evaluated would include luster, handle
and fineness

judge, at his/her discretion may assign a small portion of
the overall evaluation to Fleece. This consideration should
be used in the event of a close pair or a tie. Fleece
characteristics to be evaluated would include luster, handle
and fineness. It is the job of the Halter judge to evaluate
the animal as a whole based on positive attributes. The
fleece is a positive attribute and should be acknowledged
however the judge should not loose sight that overall
conformation, balance and movement are of critical
importance.

A. APPROVED HALTER CLASSES
1. Approved Halter Divisions
a) The purpose of these divisions is to sort groups of
animals exhibiting similar phenotype and fleece
characteristics for judging, and keep the competition fair
and to optimize the available points for all competitors.
The judging of ALL divisions will be based 90%conformation
and 10%fleece characteristics (as stated in section XI.
Halter, part 1a).

The judging of ALL divisions will be based on conformation

It has come to our attention, with a recent situation, the
need to alter the written verbiage concerning the Judging of
Showmanship. With the understanding when this division was
first developed within the ILR-SD, it was done so with
allowance of judges to utilize, at their discretion, the
ability to work these classes more 'showmanship-like', than
another Halter Class.

XIII. SHOWMANSHIP
1. Showmanship Procedures and Judging
a) Showmanship participants will be judged on their
preparation:
(1) Grooming of the animal
(2) Halter fit
(3) Properly trimmed toenails
(4) Halter/lead coordination,
(5) Personal attire and presentation
(6) Presentation of their animal as if the animal were being
shown in halter, i.e. well-behaved animals will have an
advantage.
b) The animal itself will be evaluated on
grooming
and
training
but not on conformation.
c) Exhibitors will be expected to present the animal to
optimize its best characteristics while following judge's
instructions regarding patterns, quadrants, etc.
d) It is recommended that the showmanship pattern be similar
to the judge's preferred halter pattern as appropriate to
the show ring layout.
e) The judge will also evaluate the knowledge and demeanor
of the exhibitor as they interact with the judge, ring staff
and other participants while showing to the judge.

* The goal of the showmanship class is to present the animal
to it's best advantage. In a "real life" situation, this
might involve changing place in line, maneuvering around the
show ring, backing, etc. To this end, the judge may ask
exhibitors to perform such maneuvers as backing, changing
place in line, etc. The judge, at his/her discretion, may
request these additional techniques in evaluating the
overall conduct of the class.
d) It is appropriate that the showmanship pattern be similar
to the judge's preferred halter pattern and appropriate for
the show ring layout. The judge may, at his/her discretion,
request additional patterns to demonstrate the showman's
ability to negotiate instructions.
