September 6, 2010

Conference Call Meeting – September 6, 2010, 8 pm EST

Committee Members Present: Lynda Carothers, Betty Moe, Judy Ross, Fran Soukup – Chair, Pamela Tait – Secretary

Absent: Mary Jo Miller

CALL TO ORDER:

Meeting was called to order at 8:08 pm EST. 5 out of 6 committee members were present.

MINUTES:

Minutes from July 12, 2010, meeting – approved by email and sent to office for posting.

AGENDA ITEMS:

Fleece Awards

There was discussion on what the requirements for our fleece awards program should be. This topic has been discussed a few times previously, but has not yet been implemented. The Fleece Committee recommends the fleece awards be the same as for halter and performance, which is:

            *          Certificate of Championship - 40 points and 4 Grands,

                        or 40 points and 3 Grands & 2 Reserve Grands

            *          Certificate of Excellence - 40 points

            *          Certificate of Achievement - 25 points

 and that points & Grands/Reserves from Shorn Fleece, Fleece On and 2 ounce Sample classes should be combined to earn these fleece awards.

Pam made a motion to accept this award system; Betty seconded. All ayes, motion passed.

The fleece division earns points in the classes AND in the championship class, just like in halter. The 1st and 2nd placings from each class are entered in to championship class, and all exhibits in this class are placed. (Example: If there are 2 age divisions in Suri Fleece On division, the championship class is placed to 4th, and points are awarded based on the total number in the division)

Betty made a motion that all points and grands/reserves earned in fleece divisions at any ILR-SD fleece show in 2009 and 2010 be applicable to the fleece awards; Judy seconded. All ayes, motion passed.

It should be noted that the ILR office needs to make sure that ILR-SD points awarded in the awards system are earned only when judged by an approved ILR-SD judge (example: the Big E and JBE shows).

Fleece Products

Fleece Products exhibitors should earn recognition through awards, similar to the showmanship exhibitors. Clerks will need to put the name of the exhibitor and their ILR owner code on the report form. That will allow the points to go to the exhibitor. The committee recommends that superintendents be allowed to assign a personal tracking number to Fleece Products exhibitors who do not already have an ILR owner code. Show Manager will assign five numbers for Fleece Products exhibitors who are not llama owners. These numbers should not cost these exhibitors money.

Requirements for awards earned in Fleece Products were discussed. Lynda made a motion to have the following requirements for the Fleece Products award system:

            *          Certificate of Championship - 40 points and 4 Grands,

                        or 40 points and 3 Grands & 2 Reserve Grands

            *          Certificate of Excellence - 40 points

            *          Certificate of Achievement - 25 points

Points and grands/reserves may be earned in any of the approved fleece products classes. Betty seconded the motion. All ayes, motion passed.

Pam made a motion that points earned by the same exhibitor in advanced Fleece Products classes and in novice Fleece Products classes be added together to earn awards. It was noted that youth awards are earned separately from advanced and novice awards. Lynda seconded the motion. All ayes, motion passed.

Pam made a motion to recommend that fleece shows award Grand Champion and Reserve Champion in their Fleece Products division, separating Advanced, Novice and Youth, if offered; Lynda seconded. All ayes, motion passed. Shows need to award Grand and Reserve Champion, irregardless of whether the show awards ribbons, trophies, etc, for it; if they don't, exhibitors will not be able to achieve a Certificate of Championship.

Exhibitors

FYI – Fleece judges who are judging at a fleece show may exhibit in the halter and performance classes if their animals are shown by another exhibitor, starting in 2011. However, fleece apprentices are not allowed to exhibit at any show where they are apprenticing. The entire focus of the apprenticeship should and must be on the apprenticeship and what they are learning and judging.

Fleece Judge for the 2011 ILR-SD national-level show

Requirements for the fleece judge for the 2011 national-level show were discussed at the last meeting (see July 12th minutes).

Fleece Division class list for the 2011 national-level show

The committee reviewed the proposed class list for the 2011 national-level show. It was decided that Knit, Crochet, and Machine-Knit classes would be offered separately. With that adjustment, the class list was approved.

The Fleece Products descriptions submitted by Betty and Lynda will be included in the registration material as descriptions of those classes.

Suri vs Silky

The halter committee had requested that the fleece committee revise the suri versus silky halter descriptions. There was much discussion on the needed changes, and Fran will send our recommendations back to the halter committee.

Misc

Fran made a motion to change the single fleece description wording to "Guard hair is nearly indiscernible." Betty seconded. All ayes, motion passed.

Judy made a motion to add the word "Crinkle" to the "Single with Crimp" classification of fleece; Lynda seconded. All ayes; motion passed.

The Guidelines document needs to be updated with the current fleece division scorecards. Updates need to be done by the end of October.

Motion to adjourn was made by Betty; Lynda seconded. All ayes, motion passed.

Next Meeting is tentatively scheduled for Monday, October 11th. Meeting adjourned at 10:06 pm EST.

NOTE: All motions approved by the Fleece Committee still need to be approved by the Governing Board before they go into effect.
