ILR Show Division

YOUTH COMMITTEE Minutes
January 19, 2009

The first meeting of the ILR Show Division Youth Committee was called to order at 7:00 p.m. CST on Monday, January 19th.  Members present were Kristy Brown, Karen Baum, Beth Myers, Seth Onsager, Tabbethia Haubold, Debbie Shellabarger, and Kelly Gisch.

Assignment of chairperson and secretary:

Chairperson:  Beth Myers
Secretary:  Kelly Gisch

Discussion of youth being allowed to show in both youth and open division at shows.

Will be left to the discretion of show management by weighing benefit to youth with consideration to delay or excessive length of show.

Discussion of how many youth may share the same animal:

Multiple youth showing the same animal will be permitted if necessary in youth performance classes, with the exception of showmanship, which youth may share in different age divisions only. Show management will have discretion on limiting the number of youth using the same animal if deemed necessary.

A suggestion was made to request to the Governing Board to determine a specific date or time of year at which point any performance rule changes could be proposed and approved, with changes at other times approved only in the case of legitimate and urgent safety issues.

Suggested possible performance class names (ideas, not necessarily recommendations):

Companion

Pack Trials

Freestyle Obstacle

Suggestion made to not require weight in packs for youth pack trial classes, but to require a pack with 2 cinches.

Discussion of age divisions:

Ages 8 - 11 will be Junior division.

Ages 12 - 18 will be intermediate (novice) or advanced

For 2009 youth aged 12 - 18 who have been showing 3 years or less will be placed in intermediate class.  Those who have been showing more than 3 years will be placed in advanced class.  This will be based on years showing in shows in addition to just 4H shows.

It was recommended to keep the age divisions the same for youth showmanship and performance.

It was suggested that maximum class size be set at 20 rather than 15 to avoid too many small, split classes.

Suggestion made to determine age as the age of the youth on a determined date rather than birthday.  (Example:  Age as of January 1st as in most animal industry associations)

The committee is in favor of using the UAP point system for awarding youth points.

Discussion of non-point classes:

A suggestion was made for sub-junior classes and other fun, non-point classes. This will be discussed in more detail during future meetings.

Meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m. CST.
