2012 International Gathering

of Friends and Champions

REVIEW

The 2012 International Gathering of Friends and Champions held June 15-17, 2012, in Des Moines, IA was a great success. Thank you to all the exhibitors who supported the show and to the volunteers who worked hard to bring this event to the ILR-SD membership – the judges, the clerks, the superintendents, the ring workers, the ribbon folks and all the behind the scenes folks who worked during the event to help create a successful weekend. We would like to share some of the highlights from the fun-filled weekend for those unable to attend.

Sponsors:

We had 72 sponsors for the 2nd International Gathering of Friends and Champions and without their generous contributions, the event would not have been possible. We appreciate the support of the ILR-SD members and the llama publications who sponsored the Gathering at every level. Click here to see the Gathering sponsors.

Dedication:

The 2012 event was dedicated to the memory of Bobra Goldsmith.

Gathering Entries:

            14 states represented

            82 farms represented

278 animals entered in the show

464 class entries including 144 performance entries, 236 halter entries and 85 fleece entries

Youth Programs:

1.       Youth Auction – Youth members received “Gathering Bucks” based on their 2011  ILR-SD points and their entries in the 2012 Gathering event. Members could also purchase "Gathering Bucks" to give to youth for helping them during the event. The ILR membership donated many items for the auction and the kids could purchase the items with their "Gathering Bucks." Items ranged from gift cards, headphones, cash, shirts, cameras, gift certificates, pack system to a 54” tall stuffed teddy bear. Thank you to everyone who donated items for the Youth Auction.

2.       2011 Pot of Gold Gelding Futurity for Youth – the top three Pot of Gold recipients were introduced and given their premium checks. Mark Smith Farms donated Pot of Gold jackets for the top three Pot of Gold Youth. Congratulations to Lawton Divis (Chino of Pinewood, Becky Whilhite breeder), Sophie Willette (JJ-HH’s Highlander, Gordy and Pam Jensen breeders) and Molly Johnson (Cabernet’s Albarino, Debi Garvin breeder). Introducing the ILR Camelid Companion Certification (CCC) Program:

The Camelid Companion Certification (CCC) program was introduced by Debi Garvin and a demonstration was given of the tasks to be completed. There were 10 approved certifier forms received at the Gathering. Any ILR-SD judge can be a certifier. Numerous members participated in the CCC and some llamas completed Level 1. Specifics of the program will be posted on the ILR site in the near future.

ILR Promotion Committee Fund Raisers:

The ILR Promotion Committee (Pam Jensen, Chair) really outdid themselves this year by hosting the Tastes and Treasures sales, Silent Auction and a Chinese Auction. Thanks to their hard work and the generosity of the members, we raised $2,156 dollars for the ILR through the Promotion Committee plus $590 through Youth Gathering Bucks and the ILR ‘Monte-the-Moose’ Raffle to equal $2,746!

People’s Choice Winners:

1.       Working Llama Photo Contest – congratulations Venessa Carter for your submission of a photo of a small child walking a llama in a sub-junior class.

2.       Fleece Finished Product – congratulations to Tami Lash for your felted suri llama on a music box.

ILR Annual Meeting:

The ILR Board and members of the ILR office staff served the members a picnic-style dinner followed by the ILR Annual Meeting. Members of the ILR Board and our Registrar, Jan Wassink, gave presentations to the membership. Two ILR members joined the board to promote ILR programs: Tami Lash, member of the ILR-IF/UAP Focus Group reviewed the programs, and Deb Garvin, member of the CCC Focus Group, introduced the CCC program to the members.

International Llama Foundation (ILF) Fund Raiser:

Southern States Llama Feed donated matching funds for all ILF donations received at The Gathering. The generosity of Southern States is greatly appreciated, as are the donations from the membership. For more information on the ILF, click here.

A special thank you goes out to Norris Berg and the members of The Gathering Committee
for all of your efforts to make this show a success for the ILR-SD membership.

The ILR Board welcomes your comments regarding the 2012 International Gathering of Friends and Champions, as well as your suggestions for the 2013 dedication. Please send your comments to [email protected].
